As I read “WHAT A WAGER”, I did My best to put Myself into the heart, mind, and body of the Hypnodomme.\u00a0 Hypnotizing someone in person who couldn’t hear Me is something I haven’t tried yet.\u00a0 Wow!.\u00a0 Cool!<\/div>\n
The section of this story where a totally sightless submissive describes his beliefs about how hypnotism works, sensory perceptions, and the power of assumptions to shape our actions really got Me thinking.\u00a0 I’ve included this excerpt below:<\/div>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 “Hmmm, an interesting, thought-provoking, and potentially groundbreaking challenge.\u00a0 One website which discusses hypnotizing a sightless person also asserts that someone unable to hear cannot be mesmerized by a hypnotist.\u00a0 I’ve always had My doubts about this claim.”<\/div>\n

“Why?” Chautauquathena asked.<\/div>\n

“Before we deal with that, I think we should discuss My theory about how hypnosis works.\u00a0 So far as I know, there are two categories of techniques to get the human mind into a state of heightened suggestibility: sensory overload and mental suppression.\u00a0 In computerese, thrashing means the machine is so busy moving data around no productive work gets done.\u00a0 If someone\u2019s mind is highly focused on a particular stimulus, the part of one\u2019s mind which analyzes and filters external suggestions is to some degree deactivated.\u00a0 Then, that individual becomes more receptive to suggestions introduced during their laser-like focused concentration.\u00a0 mesmerism is one of Your favorite ways of using sensory overload.\u00a0 In mental suppression, the ability to scrutinize outside suggestions is switched off by introducing some substance into the body.\u00a0 Typically, that substance is a drug, or some sort of mind altering food or drink.\u00a0 Think of sensory overload and mental suppression as two ways of walking through a revolving door which can turn in either direction.\u00a0 You can take two different paths, yet You end up in the same place.\u00a0 Think of hypnotic susceptibility as a teeter-totter or balance scale.\u00a0 Sensory overload or mental suppression sits on one end and the regular conscious mind is on the other.\u00a0 Too little mental suppression and\/or sensory overload and hypnotic suggestions are filtered and analyzed just like all others are.\u00a0 If a person receives too much sensory overload, they’re unable to concentrate on any particular stimulus.\u00a0 If an individual receives too much mental suppression, they’ll simply go to sleep or become completely unconscious.\u00a0 According to the adage, “You can’t have too much of a good thing.”\u00a0 That’s not true so far as administering sensory overload and\/or mental suppression goes.<\/div>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 “True.\u00a0 However, i’m different from the norm so far as My sensory perceptions are concerned.\u00a0 And the most effective kind of hypnotic induction for me is quite different from what works best for most people.\u00a0 What two types of sensory stimuli are used most often in mesmerism inductions and what are their functions?”<\/div>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 “I firmly believe this idea arises from certain assumptions about normalcy.\u00a0 Suppose someone supposedly normal does a particular task in a specific way.\u00a0 An all too common, often wrongly routed train of thought is expressed in this statement.\u00a0 “a person must do this task in that normal way.\u00a0 Anyone who can’t do this task in that normal way can’t do this task at all.”\u00a0 When applied to hypnotizing a deaf individual, this erroneous line of presumption disguised as sound thinking goes like this.\u00a0 “Every hypnotized person is given auditory suggestions.\u00a0 Anyone who can’t hear verbal instructions can’t be mesmerized by a hypnotist.”<\/div>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 “Many so-called normal people believe this kind of thing about some disabled persons.\u00a0 My conclusion about the so-called normals has precedents.\u00a0 Throughout most of history, it’s been assumed a completely deaf-blind person couldn’t learn how to speak.\u00a0 Here’s the logic justifying this belief.\u00a0 “Anyone who learns to speak must be able to hear or see or both.\u00a0 Anyone who can’t hear and see, can’t be taught how to speak.”\u00a0 Patty Duke won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Her portrayal of Helen Keller in the movie version of, “The Miracle Worker.”\u00a0 I have no objection to the film.\u00a0 I despise its title!”<\/div>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 “Some people who see and hear assume it’s miraculous to teach a deaf-blind individual how to speak.\u00a0 How come people who aren’t blind or deaf believe they automatically know what can or can’t be accomplished by someone who’s either or both?\u00a0 It’s just one more example of the “We know what they’re like” or “We know what they can do” or “We know what’s best for them” mindset.\u00a0 Those arrogant, presumptuous, self!-proclaimed! nor!mals!\u00a0 Why do the allegedly superior normals not comprehend the vastness of their ignorance about kinds of people they’ve had at most few interactions with?\u00a0 They’re insufferably! intolerable! to deal with.”\u00a0 he gritted his teeth as he spoke.<\/div>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 “Suppose I assume a deaf-blind person can’t learn how to speak.\u00a0 It wouldn’t make sense for Me to try and teach that person to verbally communicate.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 “Precisely, Lady Chautauquathena.\u00a0 When someone says something can’t be done, this conclusion springs from one of four possible reasons.\u00a0 Number one, the person believes the task is impossible.\u00a0 Since this is true, it’s ridiculous to try doing it.\u00a0 Number two, the task is difficult.<\/div>\n
How difficult the task is believed to be determines whether or not someone will try doing it.<\/div>\n
The assumed difficulty level may be shaped by whether or not someone’s already done it or the believer’s failure to do it or both.<\/div>\n
Number three, the person doesn\u2019t know how to do it.<\/div>\n
Two items that’ll influence someone\u2019s decision to obtain the knowledge they lack are: how easily can they get the necessary knowledge or skill and the difficulty level they assign to completing the task.<\/div>\n
Number four, the person doesn\u2019t want to do the task.\u00a0 Someone\u2019s unwillingness to attempt something can be spawned by any of the previously stated reasons.\u00a0 Once more You\u2019ve shown Your deductive skills are as well-endowed as everything about You.”<\/div>\n
