WARNING:<\/strong> Since I\u2019m writing about one person\u2019s considerable contribution to our scene, there\u2019s a danger it\u2019s going to read as shameless-in-the-bag adoration akin to those goddess worship devotionals we all know so well.
\nThat\u2019s not what this is at all, I promise.
\nThere\u2019s low points to her work, stuff that didn\u2019t work, and stuff that was both corny and not worth the money (which is the story with everyone who has ever made anything), BUT this is a documentation of history and not devotion.
\n<\/em>This isn\u2019t a 2020 word add, it\u2019s history.
\n
\n(Also, duh, I mean I\u2019m at least a little in the bag for her, and I\u2019ve never hidden that)<\/em><\/p>\n

In an earlier time I was listening to the radio (107.7 The End, Seattle) and playing Cybernator on Super Nintendo when the DJ (whose name seems like the one detail of this story I don\u2019t remember) started talking about this strange thing someone saw\/he saw on the internet:<\/p>\n

A hypnosis recording about turning you into a baby, which you could buy on tape!<\/strong><\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t say who made this recording, but a year later when I first started Internet searching:<\/p>\n

sex, hypnosis, mind control<\/strong><\/p>\n

I only saw one person selling Infantilizing tapes, and that was Goddess Marquesa (who would soon be debuting her second persona Krystal Mesmer, but more on that later), who offered an array of similar content in the Mamma Mia\u2019s Nursery section of her site, a site that wasn\u2019t JUST bondage hypnosis. So, simple deductive reasoning led me to believe that they were talking about her.<\/p>\n

(I have no recollection of if Inamortia, Evlina, the original Venus who had people get tattoos that were just 100% the Watchers tat from the Highlander TV series, or like the 2 other Hypno-Dommes in business\u2026 I mention Sophoria later, calm down\u2026 were doing that kind of stuff, but I think the answer is no, no they weren\u2019t)<\/p>\n

There was lots of emphasis on hypnosis on her site (including stories), BUT it was clear that this mysterious Marquesa (she used to not show her face at all\u2026 ah the early days of the internet) was grounded in power exchange in general and fluent in the world of BDSM as a whole.
\nShe was an actual Dominatrix who was an actual Hypnotist, an actual hypnotic dominatrix.
\nIn those days we were still a \u2018forever\u2019 (actual measurement of time) away from Erotic Hypnosis as a broad concept being recognized as a potential cash grab for adult workers, video content being ubiquitous on-line, and the market being flooded by the combination of the two.
\nIn those days we were still a \u2018forever\u2019 away from the internet being a necessary part of day to day life, and the broad permissions that have started to inundate out cultural about kink, and the way kink is becoming more acceptable, or at least more understood.
\nIn other words, there weren\u2019t a lot of Hypno-Dommes to choose from in those halcyon days of the late 90s (as joked about above), and of the Hypno-Dommes that were there, the two most popular and successful were Marquesa, and Sophoria (RIP).<\/p>\n

Sophoria was an excellent hypnotist, who in her own words, was learning how to be Dominant, and I mention her not just to offer her as a counter-example to Marquesa but because she is part of our history as well, and as this entry, and the claims I am going to make progress, it is important that she is recognized as a contributor and pillar of the history of our kink.
\nBut, where Sophoria was learning about and exploring her dominant side, Marquesa had already innovated what the model for the Erotic Hypnosis recording would be.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take a brief look at the history of hypnosis recordings in general:<\/p>\n

At some point in the history of audio recording, some hypnotist thought \u201cwhat if I record a hypnosis session and sell it\u2019, and then that became a part of the self-help oeuvre.<\/p>\n

Then, someone realized you could sell things on-line, and lo and behold you could start buying hypnosis self-help content on-line.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know who the responsible parties are, the innovators of the home hypnosis experience, but they created the basic model, and this is where Marquesa becomes truly important to our scene.
\nWhy?
\nBecause she is the one who utilized, then popularized that structure of hypnosis audio into what has become the standard form for erotic hypnosis files to this day.
\n(Also she established the basic 25-35 minute<\/u> length)<\/p>\n

Hypnosis is a participatory and cooperative endeavor, and the absence of real time interaction with the hypnotist has limited and focused what approaches to hypnosis can be utilized with recordings.<\/p>\n

As the hypnotist and the subject work together towards their goals by listening, sharing, and reacting to each other, all things that are impossible to do when one is just listening to a file, passive reception hypnosis fundamentally creates and demands a specialized approach.
\nTo create an effective experience a session has to cast a wide net, and in doing so, certain techniques in vanilla and erotic hypnosis that have proven to be effective: eye fixation, progressive relaxation, countdowns and stairs to name a few, have created the bedrock of standard issue hypnosis files.<\/p>\n

Further, that standard issue hypnosis file is also modeled after the classical clinical hypnosis session and structure, which is:
\nPre-talk > Induction > Deepener > Body Suggestion (what the file is ultimately about)
\nMarquesa took this, and made it sexy.
\nShe did this by focusing on a continuity between the parts, making the entire session a sensual experience from delivery to language choices in the induction and deepener, not just the suggestions themselves or the end results.
\nMost of her sessions told a focused and forward moving story, even if these sessions weren\u2019t narratively themed ones.
\nYour journey into submission was the story she told you.
\nThis approach created\/creates a sense of motion in the subject as they listen. You start somewhere, you end up somewhere else, and this makes hypnosis and the suggestions therein more effective, as it creates a psychological continuity for the subject\u2019s mind to follow.<\/p>\n

Not only that, but nearly 20 years later, her early sessions are still just as viable and just as affecting today as they were then. This isn\u2019t to say it\u2019s because we all lack innovation, it\u2019s more akin to the fact a car has 4 wheels and an engine, or that The Rolling Stones figured out rock and roll right out of the gate.<\/p>\n

Marquesa also weaponized clich\u00e9 in a meaningful and important way early on, because like it or not, clich\u00e9 is a hugely important part of our scene. It is, after all, where our initial ideas about erotic hypnosis often originate from.
\nThere\u2019s a reason words like \u2018Surrender\u2019 and \u2018Sleep\u2019 are used as triggers, compared to terms like apricot, or \u2018close the door and find the bus.\u2019 Because while those examples could be sexy in their own way, the overt D\/s content of our\u2026 D\/s fetish? \u2026now I\u2019m being painfully redundant here\u2026<\/p>\n

Look, there\u2019s something obvious, and inherently hot about your hypnotist triggering you with a word like Slave, or Obey.<\/p>\n

But, there\u2019s a more conceptually important clich\u00e9 she used, one that has become the marketing angle for countless sessions by other people:<\/p>\n

Cumming without physical contact, or as its more commonly known, Hands Free Orgasms.<\/u><\/p>\n

Before the term Hands Free Orgasm became a marketing term, a buzzword, and HFO an acronym, Marquesa\u2019s files presented the idea and the suggestion to experience such just such things.
\nWhile I\u2019m not saying she created the idea (that suggestion is probably about as old as hypnosis itself, to say nothing of R-Rated stage shows, or Hypnotist guests on Stern, etc.), it was present and essentially foundational in her work from right around Day 1 of her files.<\/p>\n

She is also the first person I recall seeing create POV hypnosis videos (in addition to earlier content where you could watch her subjects respond to trance triggers etc.), which means she may very well have created the very first \u2018titnosis\u2019 video as well (which is clearly a hugely important part of my fetish life<\/u>).<\/p>\n

When she rolled out her second site and secondary persona Krystal Mesmer<\/a>, her focus pivoted to video (years before that was a term), which as stated at the top of the article, presaged the proliferation of Cam Performer \u2018hypnosis\u2019 content.
\nI\u2019m sure she would be the first person to tell you that plenty of her video content was designed with much more focus on titillation over technique, much as her Lady Mesmer site was more focused on eroticism over domination.
\nThis allowed her to diversify what she was selling without really tampering with her Marquesa persona (I didn\u2019t realize Marquesa\/Krystal was the same person at first\u2026 sometimes I\u2019m slow, and again, early internet), though as time went on Marquesa did take something like a back seat as far as content by volume.<\/p>\n

Her history with video is, to say the least, just as interesting and exploratory as it was titillating and enthralling.
\nSome of the earliest, if not the earliest video content was centered around her triggering and employing suggestions on her female subjects, as well as a few videos of her, and a few of them providing hypnosis inductions.<\/p>\n

(Her brief partnership with an old version of Inraptured, and the launch of her Krystal Mesmer site, where you could get monthly memberships, was my first experience as a Mac user struggling with plug-ins, and the fear that came from a shared computer and adding new things to it)<\/p>\n

These early videos were, for technical\/practical reasons, shorter than her mp3s (some of which started as audio tapes, and that bares repeating for a sense of scope), and offered a different side of the hypnosis experience.
\nThen, with the Krystal Mesmer site, she started to offer videos that approached her audios in some ways.<\/p>\n

(Including a free preview\/demo that I couldn\u2019t enjoy because of the aforementioned plugin mac user the year 2000-ish internet issues)<\/p>\n

There was a technical understanding and foresight that went into these productions that, only on closer examination from a production end, can be truly appreciated:
\nShe recorded blocks of video only content (for use. and then strategic re-use), employed models\/performers to provide nudity\/raw visual titillation and sexuality, and recorded all of her audio as a separate track, and not as real time performance.
\nWhile it could be seen as leaving something wanting, if what you wanted was a real time video of someone talking directly to you, it was an effective and efficient means of production for her that best utilized the technology of the time.<\/p>\n

It is easier now, by any measure, to record digital video.
\nIt is easier to have convenient access to a script of any size to read off of, and given that so much of the video content that comes out today under the broad banner of content that has become \u2018erotic hypnosis\u2019 does not contain any real hypnosis at all, can also be more easily improvised as a result.<\/p>\n

As a quick aside, there are a few people out there who are excellent at improv and power talking their way through ideas when they film\/record, a task that is unique, a skill that is specialized, and something that is very hard to do when you are more versed in collaborating with your subject.
\nHypnosis is a conversation, not a monologue, but recording anything is just exactly that: a monologue.
\nThe reason I have a business is because a 25 minute mp3 contains a lot of words, and a ten minute video contains a lot of time to fill up. Hypnosis is a team sport, and when you\u2019re playing solo, talking into a lens of a mic, just talking, it takes a very particular type of person (or someone who wants to do a ton of editing) to really put together a solid product.
\nTo bring this back to Marquesa\/Krystal, no matter what you thought of her work, one thing was always clear about her efforts (and her team\u2019s efforts), they were making a quality product first and foremost, and part of doing that in this business is playing to your strengths.<\/p>\n

In any business, and remember as I am always so keen to point out that this is a business, some people are first, some people are best, and some are lucky.
\nSome innovations are obvious, and some changes come from simply borrowing ideas from other places.
\nUltimately though, when you\u2019re the one person that can combine all of these things (or enough of them), when you\u2019re the person that sees the way the pieces can (or should) fit together, you end up being important.
\nYou end up important because you end up defining the work that will follow after you.
\nYes, in our scene there are tons of instances of people coming up with the same ideas at the same time.
\nThere are tons of instances of peoples\u2019 minds naturally gravitating to the same conclusions and in turn creating the same kind of work.
\nThis is important to note.
\nIt\u2019s important because so much of the work in our fetish is done in isolation, inspired by the same greater and broader sources, created on islands of limited feedback and limited exposure to others.
\nSo, when I say Marquesa did \u2018this\u2019 first, or did \u2018that\u2019 first, it doesn\u2019t mean everyone else is copying her.
\nThough there is plenty of communicated and inherited wisdom and insight into the work, as well as a lot of inspiration and\/or copying,\u00a0copying does happen, and usually the people doing it are much closer to pure inspiration than raw plagiarism, but that\u2019s always the end result of a good idea.
\nFurther, if you have the same idea as a person that gets it out into the market before you, you aren\u2019t really copying, you\u2019re just not first, and that\u2019s both a fine and important distinction.<\/p>\n

So, with all that said, like a good hypnotist let me repeat myself again:<\/p>\n

Some people are first, some people are best, and some are lucky.
\nSome innovations are obvious, and some changes come from simply borrowing ideas from other places.
\nUltimately though, when you\u2019re the one person that can combine all of these things, when you\u2019re the person that sees the way the pieces can (or should) fit together, you end up being important, because you end up defining the work that will follow after you.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s who and what Marquesa is.
