“Madame Magda—Reader and Adviser” the carved wood sign read. It hung over the entrance to a door at a modest home in a residential area of a large city. Bob Cunningham looked around and again questioned the wisdom of his two friends who had advised him to see Magda. Over lunch he had told a couple of his friends that he had read about burglaries at art studios in town. Since he owned one of the larger galleries in the city he wanted to take more security precautions to protect his property. Both friends, also gallery owners, instead suggested that he visit Magda. They told him that she could tell, just by talking to him, if he needed more protection. As Mark entered the office he couldn’t help but notice the large portrait of Mistress Harriot, of the Harriot School for Young Men. It occupied most of one wall of the office. As he approached it almost seemed to light up, coming strangely to life, glowing so that Harriot’s dark, intense and fascinating eyes looked straight at him. Her face was stunningly beautiful – in a stern, fierce, commanding sort of way.
Mark met the portrait’s gaze coolly enough but even this confident, arrogant young man found himself ever so slightly unnerved to think that very shortly she would be right there in this very room talking to him. It made him shudder! He had been told about her reputation from his father – but Harriot in the flesh . . .awesome, hypnotic, mysterious, if this portrait was any indication – might be something else again. You’ve heard the show . . . it’s on one of those radio satellite networks that links radio stations across the country. His is a morning show and he is known for his guests who are usually strippers and radio hangers-on and such. You know him . . . he’s Herb Stringer.
To introduce the show to his new Los Angeles outlet, the network moved his show to their studios for the week. Cowie Herd, his female sidekick, and Jermain, the jerk dude-they all were there. Along with the assortment of entertainment types-out-of-work actors, dancers and singers-Herb had invited the Marquesa to be a guest on his show. Read more…

My lovely wife Luisa and I had looked forward to our vacation. We had been married for nearly three yearsand hadn’t had a real vacation during that time.
We saved for our vacation and looked at what seemed to be hundreds of travel brochures. We studied Florida, Bali, France, Germany, Italy and the rest of Europe, Jamaica, Rio, Africa . . . even Nepal. We considered scuba diving, sun bathing, dancing, museums, mountain climbing and safaris. All these were interesting but none of them really captured our imagination.
Finally we received a flyer in the mail from Occult Vacations. It promised a tour of Northern England’s haunted castles. I guess in the process of our search we had made all the mailing lists. Read more…
