Life-long Lessons at Youth Service College for Young Men

As Mark entered the office he couldn’t help but notice the large portrait of Mistress Harriot, of the Harriot School for Young Men. It occupied most of one wall of the office. As he approached it almost seemed to light up, coming strangely to life, glowing so that Harriot’s dark, intense and fascinating eyes looked straight at him. Her face was stunningly beautiful – in a stern, fierce, commanding sort of way.

Mark met the portrait’s gaze coolly enough but even this confident, arrogant young man found himself ever so slightly unnerved to think that very shortly she would be right there in this very room talking to him. It made him shudder! He had been told about her reputation from his father – but Harriot in the flesh . . .awesome, hypnotic, mysterious, if this portrait was any indication – might be something else again. THE LAIR OF LADY LANGUORIE

“Wake up sleeping beauty!” she said.

He quickly pulled his head from the velvet cushion on the large sofa and rubbed his eyes. always nice, the light was low and the drinks were potent. Read more…

TRICK, TREAT AND SILKEN SLEEP

He hated this time of year when the trick or treaters called. He just could not cope with their misplaced joy. When he was married he used to hand over cash–but no longer. He usually ignored the knock at the door.

When it came this night he was especially fractious. “Go away, just go away!” he shouted. When the street fell silent he thought he was clear of this trick or treat nuisance. Then he heard a noise at the rear of his house, where he had left the door open. Read more…

SILKY CELL-PHONE DELIGHTS

He was taking his time getting used to the States. The opportunity that his company had offered of exchanging with another staff member was truly amazing–especially for one so young. But as exciting as it all was, he was taking his time acclimatizing–especially to the different words used by Americans for things. An aubergine was an “Eggplant” Lifts were “Elevators” A CV was a “Résumé” a mobile phone a “Cell phone” Text Messages were “SMS”. Read more…
